Response to Book Fair Event: Art Spiegelman

Image result for art spiegelman garbage pail kidsImage result for art spiegelman new yorker coverWacky Packages and Garbage Pail Kids were a minuscule part of my childhood however upon the realization that Art Spiegelman was the creator of these parts of my infancy and to be able to put a face to the name/cards or so to speak was quite incredible considering how much I loved the cards quirky and grotesque features. Art Spiegelman began with a short spiel about the current state of politics, how we're in the midst of a "mudslide" and how we're in an endless cycle of wars. Then Spiegelman and Charles Kochman began discussing Si Lewen and his works/ life story and how he thought about art. "Art is not a commodity, art is priceless" is what Lewen believed and this in turn led him to create for himself and not commercial galleries. Lewen began cutting up his renowned pieces and collaging them onto other pieces because to him the paintings had dialogue and would talk to each other. Towards the end of his life Lewen developed arthritis in his art dominant hand and attempted/ failed to cut it off this event inspired him to expand his practice and he began working with clay, etc. Spiegelman proposed to Lewen that they remaster Parade. Upon seeing the final product Lewen was astounded because the accordian fold of the remastered edition further expanded upon the idea of his works interacting with one another and found that this was the ideal way to present Parade, a 55 page story with no dialogue that speaks volumes.

Small Work Story Building Exercise

Burrowing into the ground, we network and navigate under the jungle terrain to avoid the bombs.

Tunnel rats scurry through unknowingly tripping wires and trapping themselves.

This aint no joke. The conditions we're living in are inhumane; poor ventilation, cramped spaces, and snakes! Malnutrition isn't uncommon and we're living like ants. Hope won't be on the horizon for awhile.

The words I chose were burrow, war and seriousness
